He was the 29 year-old son of Arthur and Catherine Smith; husband of Elizabeth Annie Smith, of 31 St. Paul's Street, Old Radford, Nottingham. His widow was refused a pension on the grounds that they had married after enlistment.
Sgt. Frederick Gilbert Smith, M.M., [1] served with the 1st Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 15th January 1915 and was killed in action on 17th October 1918. He is buried in Pommereuil British Cemetery, France. [1] The award of the Military Medal was published in the 'London Gazette' on 17th June 1919.
In memoriam published 'Nottingham Evening Post,' 17th October 1919. :- “SMITH. – In loving memory of our dear son, Sergt. F. G. Smith, 1st K.O.Y.L.I., killed in France October 17th, 1918.
