Family History

William Sims was born in 1882 at Radford and was the son of the late William Edward an undertaker and Ellen Sims née Williamson of 147 Denman Street, Radford, Nottingham. His father William Edward was born in 1850 at Radford, he died in 1902 at Nottingham he was 52 yrs old, his mother Ellen Jane Williamson was born in 1851 in Radford, they were married in 1870 at Radford, they went on to have 10 children, 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. William married Amanda Hill in 1903 at Nottingham, they lived at 77 Denison Street Denman Street Radford Nottingham they had the following children, Arthur William born 19th December 1903, Elizabeth Ellen born 16th September 1906, Harold born 5th April 1909, Gladys born 3rd August 1912 and Ellen born 30th November 1915. In the 1911 census he and his family are living at 100 Whittier Road, Sneinton, Nottingham and are shown as William 29 yrs a lace maker, he is living with his wife Amanda 30 yrs a lace hand, they are living with their children, Arthur 7 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth 6 yrs and Harold 2 yrs of age. In the 1911 census his widowed mother is living at 147 Denman Street, Radford and was shown as Ellen 60 yrs a widow she is living with her children, Emily 34 yrs a shirt maker and Thomas 21 yrs an undertaker. Following his death his widow Amanda was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week which commenced on 2nd December 1918.

Military History

Private William Sims enlisted on 8th July 1916 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 35 yrs and 4 days, his address was 77 Denison Street, Nottingham and was a lace maker, his next of kin was his wife Amanda of the same address. He joined at the depot at Derby on 11th July 1916 and was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment. He served with the 1st battalion The Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire Regiment) and landed in France on 3rd February 1917. He joined his battalion in the filed on 20th March 1917 and was killed in action on 21st March 1918 and is buried at Caix British Cemetery, France.
