Thomas Potter was born in 1884 at Derby, he married Elizabeth Dooley (born 21st June 1885 ) in 1906 at Nottingham, they lived at 153 Norton Street, Radford, Nottingham. They went on to have the following children, Annie born 1st February 1909, Charles Henry born 4th December 1910 and Evelyn May born 3rd August 1913. In the 1911 census the family were living at 49 Langley Street, Derby and were shown as Thomas Potter 27 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 26 yrs and their children Annie 2 yrs and Charles Henry 3 months of age. Following his death his widow Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence which commenced on 11th September 1916.
Private Thomas Potter enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Radford, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action, on 14th February 1916, aged 32, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial
