John Oscroft known as 'Jack' was born on 14th November 1880 at Redhill and was the son of William a chimney sweep and Louise Oscroft née Smith His father William was born in 1853 in Arnold and his mother Louise Smith was born in 1847 in Nottingham, they were married in 1868 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have the following children, Grace b1872 Radford, Emma b1874 Arnold, Louise b1877 Arnold, John b1880 Arnold, Edith b1885 Arnold and Alice b1886 Arnold. His mother died in 1906 aged 57 yrs and his father William died in 1912 he was 63 yrs of age John lived at 42 Bramcote Street Radford Nottingham his next of kin was initially sister, Emma Davis of 19 Bunbury Street, Meadows, then wife, Mary A. Oscroft, 1 Trent Terrace, Trent St., Nottingham; later of 11 Glebe St., Nottingham. He married his wife Mary Agnes Bowley in 1904 in Nottingham, they went on to have the following children James b1904 Barnsley, Leonard b 1906 Nottingham and Wilford b1911 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 12 Academy Place, Carrington and are shown as John 30 yrs a drayman at a corn merchants, he is living with his wife Mary Agnes 27 yrs, also listed are their 3 children James , Leonard and Wilford 3 months, however all three names have been crossed through.

Military History

RNVR, Anson Bn, Royal Naval Division. Helles Memorial. Enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers 8/9/14 and transferred to the RNVR at Crystal Palace 10/9/14; Anson Bn. B/219 3/11/14-16/6/15 DD. Temporary Lieutenant The Hon. K.R. Dundas RNVR wrote 16/6/15 (RND page 1376):- "Last night was quiet, but all this a.m. they have been shelling our camp... The Turks are just dropping their new terror round us, the one from Asia that arrives without warning & explodes with a scream. It is a big gun, probably a 9.2 inch. One has just fallen & killed two of our transport men." Born 14/11/1880. A Waggoner. Home address: 5 Collison Terrace, Scotholm St., Hyson Green, Nottingham.
