Charles Oakley was born in 1867 at Derby. He married his wife Mary Ann Butler (born 26th July 1870 at Wisbech) on 2nd February 1895 at the parish church at Radford, they lived at 52 Citadel Street, Radford and had the following children, Florence Ethel born 1896, Ivy Gladys born 1899, Evaline Mabel born 1th November 1901, Beatrice May born 3rd February 1904, Hetty Agnes born 1st December 1906 and Ethel Lottie born 26th June 1909. In the 1911 census the family lived at 33 Pine Street, Radford, Nottingham and were shown as Charles Oakley 43 yrs a lace threader, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 40 yrs and their children, Florence Ellen 15 yrs a costume maker, Ivy Gladys 12 yrs a scholar, Evelyn Mabel 9 yrs a scholar, Beatrice May 7 yrs a scholar, Hetty Agnes 4 yrs and Ethel Lottie 1 year of age. Commencing 24th October 1917 his widow was awarded a pension 23rd October 1917. at this time she was living at 53 Citadel Street, Radford, Nottingham.
Private Charles Oakley enlisted on 2nd August 1915, he gave his age as 39 yrs and 11 months, (Which was incorrect as he was born in 1867 and would have made him 48 year old) his address was 52 Citadel Street, Radford, he was a factory land hand and his next of kin was his wife Mary Ann of the same address he gave his religion as that of a Wesleyan. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment on 18th October 1915. He was discharged from the Army on 6th April 1916 as unlikely to become an efficient soldier. He appeared before a medical board on 26th April 1917 which found he was suffering from delusional insanity. He died on 23rd October 1917 at Nottingham of tuberculosis of the lungs and is buried at the Nottingham General Cemetery
