Charles William was born in 1887 at Nottingham and was the son of Thomas Charles a lace warehouseman and later publican and Sarah Ellen Mellows née Bardill of 45 Bovill Street Radford Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1863 in Stapleford and his mother Sarah Ellen Bardill was born in Stapleford in 1867, they were married in 1884, their marriage being recorded in the Shardlow registration district. They went on to have 3 children , Charles William b1887, Frederick Walter b1890 and Gladys Irene b 1900, all the children were born in Stapleford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 73 Brookhill Road, Stapleford and are show as Thomas Charles 48 yrs a lace warehouseman, he is living with his wife Sarah Ellen 44 yrs and their children Charles William 24 yrs a lace maker, Frederick Walter 21 yrs a lace warehouseman and Gladys Irene 11 yrs. His father Thomas Mellows, took over the Moulder's Arms Public House, Nottingham on 31st December 1913. He died on 6th October 1918 and the licence was transferred to his widow on 31st December 1918
Private Charles William Mellows, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 910th Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps, he died of typhoid in 50th General Hospital, Salonica, on 2nd December 1917 and is buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria. His brother Frederick Walter Mellows also served during the Great War , he enlisted in Nottingham on 30th April 1915 at the age of 25 yrs and 2 months, he served with 34th Divisional Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery, he survived the war and was discharged on 29th January 1919.
Obituaries published in the Nottingham evening post dated 10th December 1917 and 2nd December 1918: - “MELLOWS. - On December 2nd, 1917, typhoid, Private C. W. Mellows, M.T., A.S.C., aged 31 years. Beloved and respected by customers of Moulders' Arms, Radford. We little thought when he left home it was his last good-bye, as he left his home one evening, in a soldier's grave to lie; but the hardest part is yet to come, when the heroes will return, and we miss among the cheering crowd the face of our dear friend.” “MELLOWS. - In loving memory of Pte. Charles William, the dearly-loved son of Sarah and the late Thomas Charles Mellows, Moulders' Arms, Radford, died December 2nd, 1917, in Salonica, aged 31.
