Family History

Richard ‘Dick’ Keeling was born on 1st November 1884 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 1st April 1900 at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham, he was the son of Frances a pate layer and the late Sarah Keeling née Ofiler of 1 Orchard Street, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham. His father Francis was born in 1836 at Bobbersmill, Nottingham his mother Sarah Ofiler was born in 1839 also at Bobbersmill, she died in 1892 aged 53 yrs, they were married on 11th April 1858 at Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his widowed father Francis 74 yrs is living on his own at 1 Orchard Street, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham. Dick married Lily Hodgetts (born 15th August 1884 Leicester) they were married in 1908 their marriage was recorded in Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire, they had a son Francis Edward born 3rd January 1909, they lived at 69 Long Row, Ashby Road, Coalville. Commencing 2nd August 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Private Dick Keeling enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 8th November 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Belgium.
