Arthur Hughes (junior) was born in 1895 at Dronfield, Derbyshire and was the son of Arthur Hughes senior and Jane Hughes née Bembridge of 29 Pine Street, Radford, Nottingham. His father Arthur (senior) was born in 1860 at St Ann’s, Nottingham, his mother Jane was born in 1864 at Burton, Derbyshire, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Rotherham registration district, and went on to have the following children, Walter Henry b1891 Rotherham, Arthur b1895 Dronfield, Derbyshire, Percy b1898 Radford, Edith b1900 Radford, Alfred b1902 Radford and Albert Edward b1904 Radford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 29 Pine Street, Old Radford, Nottingham, they are shown as Arthur 51 yrs a widow and a banksman at the Wollaton colliery, he is living with his children, Walter Henry 20 yrs a stoker, Arthur 16 yrs a ganger at Wollaton colliery, Percy 13 yrs a scholar, Edith 11 yrs a scholar, Alfred 9 yrs a scholar and Albert Edward 7 yrs .
Private Arthur Hughes enlisted at Nottingham, he served in the 13th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and died of wounds on 7th October 1917. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
His brother Percy Hughes service with the service number 242789 in the 4th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry he attested on 11th May 1916 at Nottingham and was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 13th October 1916 and reported to the Derby Depot. He was discharged from the Army on 28th September 1917 no longer physically fit for war duties and issued with Silver war badge number 263343 his discharge address was 29 Pine Street, Old Radford.
