John Hawley was born in 1882 he was the son of the late Samuel a lace maker and carter and Emma Hawley née Aram. Samuel was born in 1848 at Nottingham, he died in 1916 aged 68 yrs Emma Aram was born in 1849 she died in 1898 aged 49 yrs they were married in 1867 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 8 children. In 1911 John lived with his brother William, sister in law Hannah and nephew John at 12 Cobden Terrace Plimsoll Street Hyson Green Nottingham. At the same address were another brother Albert Hawley and William Jones also listed as a brother. At the time of his death he was living at 45 Boville Street, Radford, Nottingham.
Private John Hawley enlisted on 21st July 1902 at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He served in Hong Kong from 5th March 1904 to 6th December 1904 and the Strait Settlements, 7th December 1904 to 19th July 1911. He went to France 10th October 1914 and was killed in action, 12th March 1915, during the German counter attack at Neuve Chapelle, France. His name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
