Family History

He was born about 1893/1894, the fourth son and sixth child of William and Eliza Ann Gill and the brother of William, Florence, Ronald George, Jesse, Mabel and Robert. In 1901 they lived at 7 Thackeray's Yard, Radford. In 1911 the family was at 32 Auckland Street, Radford; only five of the seven children were in the household, Ronald George (23), Jesse (21), Mabel (19), Walter (17) and Robert (11). There was also an elderly boarder, William Timson (90), living with them. Their mother, Eliza (46), who was previously a laundress, was employed in 'home work' and was the head of the household although married, not widowed. The notice in the local paper of Walter's death in 1917 gives the name of his mother but not his father, so it is possible that his parents had separated by the time of the 1911 census.
