He was the son of Arthur and Mary Ann Bucknall and the brother of Ethel and Edward Bucknall. In 1911 they lived at 80 St Peter's Street Old Radford Nottingham.
Arthur Bucknall entered theatre after 1 January 1916 and joined the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters. The battalion had taken Gouzeacourt Somme on 12 April 1917 and that evening were relieved but sent forward again the next morning. They were tasked with advancing and straightening the line out but came under heavy machine gun fire and also found the enemy wire uncut. The men were forced back to its original line after suffering heavy casualties. Arthur was one of the men killed. He is buried in Honnechy British Cemetery grave I.A.28. It is likely that Arthur was captured and died in German hands as the cemetery was in German territory until 1918. A number of German cemeteries containing British dead were concentrated here after the Armistice. John Morse
