John was an agricultural labourer and in 1891 the family was living on Church Lane, Desford. They were still living in the same area in 1901 although John was now working as a market gardener. All four children; John (21), Bertie (19), Percival (16) and Ethel (14), were still living at home. By 1911 John Henry was an assistant gardener on the staff at a juvenile institution in or near Market Bosworth. The premises included an isolation hospital, a house for two nurses, 12 houses for staff and a school and accommodation for several hundred inmates. The staff and their families accounted for 51 people plus two nurses. Only John and Johanna's two youngest children, Percival and Ethel, were still living with them. Percival married Esther Barnett in Nottingham in 1913 (Apr/May/Jun). Esther was the daughter of Mark and Kate Bennett and in 1911 she and her parents were living at 267 Alfreton Road, Nottingham.
