Percival was born in 1884 (Apr/May/June), the son of John Henry and Johanna Archer. John and Johanna had at least four children; John Henry, Thomas Bertie, Percival Edwin and Edith Ethel. John was an agricultural labourer and in 1891 the family was living on Church Lane, Desford. They were still living in the same area in 1901 although John was now working as a market gardener. All four children; John (21), Bertie (19), Percival (16) and Ethel (14), were still living at home. By 1911 John Henry was an assistant gardener on the staff at a juvenile institution in or near Market Bosworth. The premises included an isolation hospital, a house for two nurses, 12 houses for staff and a school and accommodation for several hundred inmates. The staff and their families accounted for 51 people plus two nurses. Only John and Johanna's two youngest children, Percival and Ethel, were still living with them. Percival married Esther Barnett in Nottingham in 1913 (Apr/May/Jun). Esther was the daughter of Mark and Kate Bennett and in 1911 she and her parents were living at 267 Alfreton Road, Nottingham. Esther was 22 years old and employed as an umbrella machinist. Percival's address on the Probate record and Esther's address on the CWGC record were given as 267 Alfreton Road.
'E' Corps Signals Coy. He died of wounds at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Belgium, and is buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul (grave ref. II.B.54). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
His widow, Esther, was his sole legatee. Probate: Archer. Percival Edwin of 267 Alfreton-road Nottingham a lance-corporal in HM Army died 15 November 1917 in France Probate Nottingham 19 February to Esther Archer widow. Effects £57 2s. 6d. Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 15th November 1918:- “ARCHER. – In loving memory of my dear husband, L.-Cpl. Percy Archer, R.E., died of wounds in France, November 15th, 1917. Too deeply loved to be forgotten. – Loving wife and child. “ARCHER. – In loving memory of our dear son-in-law, Percy, died of wounds in France November 15th, 1917. Fondly remembered. – Ma and dad Barnett. “ARCHER. – In loving memory of our dear nephew, Percy, died of wounds in France November 15th, 1917.
