Family History

John was born on 1st February 1891 in Govan, Lanarkshire and was the son of John William a professional soldier and Bridget Amelia Darwin. John Wiliam (senior) was a native of Retford and his wife Amelia was from Ireland. In the 1901 census the family are living at 6 Spa Road,East Retford, and John (junior) is 9 years of age. By the 1911 census John (junior) following in his fathers footsteps has left home and is a professional soldier, a private , single, in barracks at The Border Regiment Depot at Carlisle.

Military History

He enlisted in Retford and served with the 1st battalion, the Boarder Regiment , his medal cards indicate he first saw theatre of war in (2B) the Balkans/ Gallipoli on 25th April 1915 . He contracted dysentery from which he died.He is buried in Addolorata Cemetery, Malta grave reference E EA A 601.
