Ernest Wootton was born in 1886 at Basford and was the son of Thomas a fish fryer and green grocer and Elizabeth Ellen Wootton née Blood of 34a Victoria Street Huckmanll Torkard Nottinghamshire. His father Thomas was born in 1862 at Castle Donnington, Leicestershire, his mother Elizabeth Ellen Blood was born in 1864 at Morley Moor, Derbyshire, they were married in 1878 their married was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had the following children, George b1884 Castl Donnington, Alfred b1885 Nottingham, Ernest b1886 Basford, Thomas b1893 Bulwell and Flossie b1895 Bulwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at 34a Victoria Street, Hucknall and are shown as Thomas 49 yrs a fish fryer and green grocer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 47 yrs and their children, George 27 yrs assisting in fathers business, Ada 26 yrs assisting in her fathers business, Ernest 25 yrs assisting in fathers business, Thomas 18 yrs stationary motor driver and Flossie 16 yrs assisting in her fathers business.
Rifleman Ernest Wootton, enlisted on 31st July 1915 at Hucknall, he gave his age as 29 yrs and 210 days, he was an electrician living at 34a Victoria Street, Hucknall, Nottingham , his next of kin was his father Thomas of the same address. He was posted to the 8th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps and joined them at their barracks at Winchester on 4th August 1915. He landed in France on 29th January 1916 and was killed in action on 22nd December 1916. The battalion had been relieved from the front line trenches that day but his billet was struck by artillery fire, killing three and wounding four. He is buried in Beaumetz-les-Loges Communal Cemetery,
CWGC incorrectly cites age 32. He was born J/F/M/1886 which is consistent with age 25 on the 1911 Census.
