Robert was born in 1889 in Edgefield, Norfolk and was the son of John William a cab proprietor and Annnie Woods, of 540, Woodborough Rd., Nottingham. Roberts siblings included , Mable, Alice, Harold Isobel, Robert , and Arthur. In the 1901 census the family are living at 48 Coppice Road, Mapperley . in the 1911 census Robert is in barracks with the 2nd battalion, Sherwood Foresters at Crowhill barracks, Crowhill, Devon
Robert was a career soldier , he originally joined the Army on 2nd December 1909, signing on for 7 years. At this time he was already serving in the territorials in the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was 18 years and 10 months of age at the time of his enlisted and gave his occupation as that of carter , his next of kin was his father John William Woods of 540 Woodborough Road, Nottingham. He served on the home front from 2nd December 1909 until 28th September 1911 and then went onto India where he served until the outbreak of war , on 3rd September 1914 he came back to England and served here until he left to join the British Expeditionary Force on 4th November 1914. He was killed in action on 11th March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle, having served a total of 5 years and 100 days in the army. His body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Le Tourett memorial , Pas De Calais, France.
