Family History

Arthur Hipkiss was born in 1882 he was the son of John a general labourer and Emily Hipkiss née Adams, of Derby. John was born in 1839 at Overend, Worcestershire, Emily Adams was born in 1843 at Brockmore, Staffordshire, they were married in in 1866 at Stourbridge and went on to have 4 children. In 1911 Arthur has left the family home, he is living at 8 Bentinck Street, Annesley Woodhouse, he is shown as being 29 yrs and a coal miner, he is living with Arthur Tom Thorpe 39 yrs a colliery horse keeper and his wife.

Military History

Rifleman Arthur Hipkiss enlisted on 22nd April 1901 at Derby, giving his age as 18 yrs and 3 months, he was a labourer. He was posted to the 2nd battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He saw service in South Africa, Malta and Egypt and went to France on the outbreak of the war. He was wounded a gun shoot wound to his chest (serious) and as a result was returned to England for treatment on 10th November 1914 until 30th December 1915 when he returned to France. He was killed in action on 9th September 1916 and is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery 15.F.21
