Family History

William Jefferson Wilkinson was born in 1882 at South Collingham and was the son of the late Joseph a jobbing gardener and Catherine Pascha Wilikinson née Caudwell of Rose Cottage, Upton Road, Southwell. His father Joseph was born in 1841 at Westward, Cumberland and died in 1914 and his mother Catherine Pascha Caudwell was born in 1854 at Southwell, they were married in 1874 at Bradford and went on to have 8 children, 2 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their children were Arabella b1876 at Tadcaster, Barbara Lydia b1878 Tadcaster, Pascha Mary b1880 Healaugh, William Jefferson b1883 Collingham, Mabel b1885 Collingham, John James b1888 Collingham, Susan Annie b1889 and Arthur b1891 Southwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at Rose Cottage, Upton Road, Southwell and are shown as Joseph 69 yrs a jobbing gardener, he is living with his wife Catherine Pascha 57 yrs and their children, Barbara Lydia 32 yrs a cook and John James 24 yrs a bricklayer. William was the husband of Annie Wilkinson, (born 12th July 1886 ) of Kirklington Rd., Southwell.

Military History

Gunner William Jefferson Wilkinson enlisted at Southwell, he served with the 278th Siege battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, he was killed in action on 5th July 1917 and is buried at Dickebusch New Military Cemetery Extension, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Article published 13th August 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Eldest son of the late Mr & Mrs Wilkinson, Rose Cottage, Southwell. Apprenticed to Mr Copestake of Southwell, where he remained for eight years, leaving to go to Canada in 1905. Returned in 1914 and set up as a poultry farmer at Holly Cottage, Graves Lane, Edingley. Joined army 1916. Leaves a widow and three children.
