Family History

Harold Taylor was born in 1895 at Smalley, he was baptised on 25th August 1895 at Alfreton and was the son of Daniel Thomas and Ellen Taylor née Tyler 23 Woods Yard, Club Street, Sutton in Ashfield. His father Daniel Thomas was born in 1871 at Belper, Ellen Tyler nee Wilson was born in 1871 at Shirland, Derbyshire, they were married on 13th April 1890 at the parish church at Duffield, Ellen was a widow her maiden name was Wilson. In 1911 Daniel is living at Brookdale Road, Sutton in Ashfield, he is shown as being 40 yrs of age married and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with Grace Wakeman 50 yrs a housekeeper and sons Frederick 21 yrs a coal miner hewer, Harold 15 yrs a coal miner ganger and Cecil 6 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Harold Taylor enlisted on 17th September 1914 at Mansfield giving his age as 19 yrs and 4 months, his occupation as Hall boy, gentleman's servant, he was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 30th July 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial.
