Family History

Walter Singleton was born in 1888 and was the son of Samuel a frame work knitter and Mariah Singleton née Kent of Tudor Street, Sutton in Ashfield. Samuel was born in 1858 at Radford, Mariah Kent was born in 1857 at Ashover, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Radford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly two died in infancy or earley childhood. In 1911 the family are living at Tudor Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Samuel is 52 yrs and a frame work knitter he is living with his wife Mariah 53 yrs and 6 of their children. In 1911 Walter has left the family home and is in the Army, we find him living at Blenheim barracks at Aldershot he is 22 yrs single and a soldier in the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards. Walter married Lylie Coleman (born 19th April 1883 ) in 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 8 Brown Street, Hyson Green Nottingham. Commencing 26th February 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 11 shillings a week.

Military History

Sergeant Walter Singleton enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards. He landed in France on 10th August 1914 and was killed in action on 11th August 1916 and is buried at Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart, France.
