Morris Samuel Scrivener was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the son of Edgar an engineers turner and Jane Scrivener née Rodwell of 41 Glapton Road The Meadows, Nottingham. His father Edgar was born in 1867 in Peterborough and his mother Jane Rodwell was born in 1869 in Wellingborough, they were married in 1892 in Nottingham and went on to have 4 children all of whom were born in Nottingham, they were Morris Samuel b1894, Florence Grace b1895, George Rodwell b1900 and Arthur Edgar b1905. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Holgate Road, Meadows, Nottingham and are shown as Edgar 44 yrs an engineering turner, he is living with his wife Jane 42 yrs and their children Morris Samuel 17 yrs an engineering pattern maker, Florence Grace 16 yrs a sewing machinist, George Rodwell 11 yrs a scholar and Arthur Edgar 6 yrs.
Private Morris Samuel Scrivener, attested on 8th December 1915 at Lincoln , he gave his age as 22 yrs and 213 days , his address was given as 18 Sibthorpe Street, Lincoln (Later amended to 41 Glapton Road, Meadows, Nottingham) his gave his occupation as an engineers pattern maker and his next of kin as his father Edgar of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and was mobilised on 16th February 1916 at Derby and was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 15th June 1916 and attached to the 1st battalion South Staffordshire Regiment on 8th July 1916. He was reported missing in action on 15th July 1916 later amended to killed in action on that day. He had served for only 220 days in the army, and had been in France for only one month. Having no known grave his name commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
