Richard Claude Savidge was born in 1896 and was the son of Richard, a carpenter and Emma Savidge who lived at 12 Sidney Terrace, Woodborough. He appears to be recorded in the 1901 census as Claude and he was then aged 4 years. Also listed is a son called Sidney.. He is recorded in St Swithun's Baptism Register as being baptized on 28th June 1896. The Baptism register also records another son of Richard and Emma – Ernest Edward. The 1911 census shows the family living at The Row, Woodborough at this time he is 14 yrs of age and working as a market gardener.
Richard served as a Lance Corporal with 'B' Company of 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys) Regiment, In April 1918 approximately a month after the commencement date of the German offensive his company was chosen to counter-attack the Germans who had entered Aveluy Wood near Thiepval it was during this attack that he was killed and is buried at Aveluy Wood (Lancashire Dump) Cemetery at Mesnil-Martinsart
