Family History

Lawrence was born in Nottingham 9th November 1891 and was the son of Charles and Ellen Maude (also Maude Ellen) Pitt (née Brooks). Lawrence was baptised on 20th December 1891 at St Peter's Church, Nottingham. His father Charles was born in Lowdham in 1869, the son of James and Hannah Pitt, and baptised in the parish church, Lowdham, on 2 May 1869. His mother Ellen Maude Brooks, was born in Liverpool on 5 June 1867. Charles and Ellen were married at Nottingham St Peter on 26th January 1891 and had six children: Lawrence b. Nottingham 9 November 1891 bap. Nottingham St Peter 20 December 1891, Refina May (also Renfa/Refna) b. Lowdham 21 January 1894 bap. St Peter 29 April 1894, Ernest John b. Nottingham 23 April 1896 bap. St Peter 12 July 1896, Clarice b. Lowdham 29 June 1899, Edith Ellen b. Lowdham 31 October 1901 and Daisy b. Lowdham 9 February 1904. At the time of the 1891 Census, a few months after their marriage, Charles (21), a tailor, and Ellen (23) were living in Cumberland Place, Postern Street, Nottingham. Their first child, Lawrence, was born in Lowdham in the November but by the time of his baptism in Nottingham in December 1891 they had moved to 3 Bromley Place, Nottingham. Charles and Ellen were living at 9 Matlock Street, Nottingham, when Refna was baptised in 1894 and at 23 Bromley Place, Nottingham, at the time of Ernest's baptism in 1896. However, when the 1901 census was completed Charles and Ellen were back living in Lowdham on Station Road with their four children, Lawrence (9), Renfa (7), Ernest (4) and Clarice (1). Their daughter Edith was born in Lowdham later that year. Charles died in 1903 (A/M/J Nottingham) aged 34, and the sixth child, Daisy, was born posthumously on 9 February 1904 in the parish of Nottingham St Andrew. In 1911 the family was living at 46 Marple Street, Alfred Street North, Nottingham and shown as Edith Maud Pitt 34 yrs a widow, head of the family, living with her six children Lawrence 19 yrs a solicitor's clerk, Refina 17 yrs a 'frilling' in a lace warehouse, Ernest John 14 yrs a chemist's errand lad, Clarice 11 yrs, Edith 9 yrs and Daisy 7 yrs. At the time of Lawrence's death in 1916 the family was still living at 46 Marple Street, Nottingham. The second daughter, Clarice, married George H Hudson in 1923 (O/N/D Nottingham) and had one daughter, Joan May b. 8 March 1924. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, they were living at 6 Wellington Street, Nottingham; George (b. 7 February 1897) was a dyer's labourer and his daughter a shorthand typist. Clarice died in 1974 (O/N/D Nottingham). Her daughter Joan married Kenneth Earp in 1944 (A/M/J Nottingham) and died on 12 January 1983. Ellen Maud Pitt continued to live at 46 Marple Street and in 1939 was recorded living there with her four unmarried children: Refna a dress cutter, Ernest a leather worker foreman, Edith a hosiery flatlocker and Daisy a draper's assistant. Daisy died on 19 February 1941; adminstration of her will was awarded to her brother, Ernest John, a warehouseman. Their mother, Ellen Maud died on 24 February 1947. Refna May died in 1960 (J/F/M Newark). Ernest John died on 7 February 1965; he was living at 5 Grimsby Terrace, Nottingham. Probate was awarded to Kenneth Earp, the husband of Ernest's niece Joan (nee Hudson). Edith Ellen was living at 5 Grimsby Terrace, Watkin Street, Nottingham, at the time of her death on 6 April 1979.

Military History

Lawrence Pitt enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 98th Field Company Royal Engineers. He landed in France on 11th September 1915 and was killed in action on 22nd February 1916. He was buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Nord, France (grave reference IXF 61). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
