Family History

James was born in 1882 in Ruddington the son of John a framework knitter and Elizabeth James (née Sharpe). John was born in 1849 in Ruddington, Elizabeth Sharpe in 1850 also in Ruddington. Married in 1868, they had eleven children - Walter b1868, Alfred b1870, Elizabeth b1872, Abrahm b1873, Herbert b1875, William b1877, Martha b1879, Frederick b1882, John b1884, Bertha b1885 and Emma b1889; all the children were born in Ruddington . Frederick married Ada Sharpe at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, on 10th April 1909. They had two daughters - Doris born 15th April 1910 at Wilford and Alice born 2nd July 1912 at Nottingham. They lived at Woodley Street, Ruddington. In 1911 they lived on Oliver’s yard. High Street, Ruddington. With effect from August 1919, Ada received a weekly pension of 25/5d for herself and children.

Military History

Frederick James attested in Coventry on 24th November 1915 and the following day was placed into the reserves. He was mobilised on 25th October 1916 and was posted on 27th October 1916 to the 5th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Following his training he went out to join the British Expeditionary Force in France. He embarked from Southampton on 29th November 1917 and disembarked at Le Harve the following day 30th November 1917. By the 5th December 1917 he had been posted to the 2/6th battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, He was captured at Holnon Wood on 26th March 1918 and died of cellulitis in his left leg as a prisoner of war on 16th September 1918. He is buried in Sarralbe Military Cemetery, Moselle Grave Reference: D 18.
