Family History

Peter Wilson Percy Parkes was born in 1883 the son of James a stone getter and the late Elizabeth Ann Parkes née Wadsworth of Stockwell Gate, Mansfield. James was born in 1850 at Sutton in Ashfield, Elizabeth Ann Wadsworth was born in 1856 , she died in 1909 aged 53 yrs, they were married on 4th April 1873 at St Wilfred's Church, Kirkby in Ashfield, they had 8 children. In the 1911 census James is shown as being 60 yrs of age a widow and a labourer, he is living at 5 Samsons Yard, Stockwell Gate, Mansfield with his married son Herbert Parkes 37 yrs. in the 1911 census we find Peter Parkes living in military barracks, Crownhill bar4racks in Devon , he is shown as being 28 yrs of age and a cook and private soldier serving with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He married Mary Elizabeth Smale (born 12th December 1884) in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Plymouth registration district. they lived at Top Row, West End Sutton in Ashfield and had the following children, Irene Maud born 1st March 1912, John James Herbert born 22nd April 1913 and Kathleen Amy born 8th September 1914. Commencing 16th April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week.

Military History

Private Peter Wilson Percy Parkes enlisted in Walsall whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 16th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
