Family History

Wilfred Newsome was born on 16th January 1888 at Brodsworth, Yorkshire and was the son of Thomas Priestley Newsome a waggoner on a farm and Mary Ann Newsome née Flatters of Ratcliffe on Soar Nottinghamshire. His father Thomas Priestly Newsome was born in 1862 at Brodsworth and his mother Mary Ann Flatters was born in 1865 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, they were married in 1884 at Brodsworth and went on to have 12 children, 1 however sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1901/1911 census were Edith b1885 Yorkshire, Arthur b1886 Yorkshire, Wilfred b1888 Yorkshire, Annie b1890 Yorkshire, Charles b1891 Yorkshire, Sarah Ann b1893 Yorkshire, Dorothy Ann b1895 Shardlow, Derbys, David b1897 Alveston Derbys, Mary Ann b1901 Alveston, Thomas b1903 Alveston, Alice b1907 Boulton, Derbyshire and Samuel b1909 Ratcliffe on Soar. In the 1911 census the family are living at Ratclifffe on Soar, village and are shown as Thomas 48 yrs a waggoner on a farm, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 46 yrs and their children, Wilfred 23 yrs a labourer at a plaster pit, David 13 yrs a farm hand, Mary Ann 9 yrs a scholar, Thomas 7 yrs a scholar, Alice 4 yrs and Sam 1 year of age.

Military History

Lance Sergeant Wilfred Newsome enlisted at Derby and served with the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards, he landed in France on 26th July 1915 and was killed in action between the 14th-17th September 1916. He is buried in the Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs

Extra Information

Two of his brothers also served during the ' Great War' Charles was a Corporal in the 18th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, and David was a Rifleman in the 8th battalion the King's Royal Rifle Corps , both survived the war
