John was born in 1897 in Mapperley, Nottingham and was the son of Hannah Maria Muddeman, of 26, Glade Rd., Marlow, Bucks, and the late Tom Muddeman a commercial traveller. His father Tom was born in 1862 in Nottingham, his mother Hannah Maria Muddeman née Holford was born in 1862 in Mosspit, Staffordshire, they were married in 1884 their marriage being recorded in the Wolverhampton Registration district. They had 5 children in total however sadly 1 died in infancy or childhood prior to 1911, their surviving children were : Sidney Tom b1886, Hilda Dorothy b1893, Leslie Holford b1895 and John Stanley b1897 , all the children were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Henry Road West Bridgford and are shown as Tom 49 yrs head of the family a commercial traveller, he is living with his wife Hannah Maria 49 yrs and their children Sidney Tom 25 yrs a commercial traveller, Hilda Dorothy a drapers assistant, Leslie Holford 16 yrs a clerk, and John Stanley 14 yrs unemployed, also at the address on the night of the census was Elizabeth Holford, 77 yrs a widow and two lodgers.
Private John Stanley Muddeman, enlisted at Nottingham on 3rd September 1914, giving his age as 19 years, 135 days on 4th he was posted to the depot of the Leicestershire Regiment, on 24th September 1914,he was posted to the 8th battalion at Aldershot. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 15th October 1914 and to Corporal on 25th September 1915. On 28th September 1915, he embarked from Folkstone to join the British Expeditionary Force in France. Within the month he was killed in action on 12th October 1915.He was buried in Berles-au-Bois Churchyard Extension,
His brother Sidney Tom Muddiman had emigrated to Canada prior to the outbreak of the Great War, however he soon enlisted into the Canadian Army. He enlisted on 24th August 1914 at Ottawa, Ontario and served with service number1609 in Princess Patrcia's Canadian Light Infantry , upon enlistment he gave his date of birth as 15th September 1884,(29 yrs) he gave his occupation as a book keeper and stated he had previous military experience. ( Trooper in the Imperial Yeomanry during the Second Boer War ) He was wounded on 27th February 1915 during active service, and discharged from the Army on 4th March 1915 owing to his wounds.
