Family History

William Thomas Mellish and Susan Collingham of Whitwell married in 1888, registered at Worksop. William was a farmer residing in Belph, Whitwell, Derbyshire and had a farm which farmed in agriculture, cattle and horses and usually employed live in farm workers. William and Susan had four children, Mary S born 1889, Susan born 1891, James Richard born 1893 and Charles C born 1895. All were born in Belph. In 1911 the two boys were working on their father’s farm, no doubt learning the trade.

Military History

Richard enlisted at Worksop and went first to Egypt on the 27th April 1915. No details are recorded of his time in the military other than in November 1917 he was serving in Palestine where he was killed in action and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial.
