Arthur Robert Matthews was born in 1884 at Newark, he married his wife Rose Ethel Mary Redmile in 1907 at Newark , they went on to have a daughter Doris Irene Matthews born 10th July 1908 in Newark, they lived at 42 Vernon Street, Newark.

Military History

Private Arthur Robert Matthews enlisted on 11th April 1918 at Derby and served with the 1/1st battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 5th September 1918 and is buried at Peronne Communal Cemetery, Somme, France. 5.M.19

Article published in the Newark Advertiser on 25th September 1918 :- Husband of R.E.M. Matthews, 42 Vernon Street, Newark. After leaving the Wesleyan School was for many years employed by Mr G.E. Dobney, builder and afterwards with Messrs. Ransome & Co., Ltd. Joined the Leicesters on April 11th, 1918 and was home on his first and final leave as recently as five weeks ago, being only abroad three weeks before his death. He went ‘over the top’ with the battalion in the early morning, but during the action was hit in the chest by a machine-gun bullet and killed. Leaves a widow and little girl. Two years ago, Mrs Matthews lost her brother Pte. C. Redmile.
