Richard Oliver Marsden was born in 1895 at Misson, the youngest of 3 children to William John & Frances Marsden. His working life started working on a farm. The year that the war started, 1914, he married a local girl, Martha Shepherd and a year later, they had a daughter Lucy M Marsden. Of course, Richard was killed in the war leaving his wife widowed, and as a young woman she remarried to another Misson villager, Herbert Binks, in 1920.
Richard signed up on 12 Sept 1915, fought in the Egyptian theatre and was awarded the British and Victory medals and the 1915 Star. He died on the 21st November 1918 at Nottingham Hospital. he was returned home and buried in Misson cemetery, with full military honours including a firing party and " The Last Post " being sounded.
Pte Richard Marsden Retford Times 29th November 1918 Misson The sad news has been received of the death on Thursday at Nottingham Hospital of private Richard Oliver Marsden (23) son of Mr and Mrs William Marsden. He leaves a widow and a little girl. He had served at Salonika and Egypt. He had been a great sufferer, and was invalided home only a few months ago. The funeral took place on Tuesday under the escort of a firing and bearer party from the Bawtry Volunteer Force. The members of the family present were the widow, Mr and Mrs Wm Marsden (father and mother ) Miss Marsden, Mr and Mrs Wm Marsden, jun, Mr and Mrs F Marsden, Mr Shepherd (widows father) Mrs W.H. Marsden, and Mrs Tye, together with Mr W Low and Mr J Jones. many people attended the service in Church, where two hymns were sung. The rev F.W. Keene officiated, and Mrs A Dickinson played the "Dead march" The soldiers fired three volleys over the grave and the bugler sounded "The Last Post"
