Family History

Henry Herbert Hickling known as ‘Harry’ was born in 1895 he was the son of William Henry a hospital porter and Mary Ann Hickling née Barker of 17 Glapton Road, Nottingham. His father William Henry was born in 1866 at Tollerton, his mother Mary Ann Barker was born in 1872 at Nottingham, he was the brother of Lillian (born 1887), Horace (born 1889), Gladys Maude (born 1902) and Herbert Hickling (born 1904). In 1901 the family lived at 20 Preston Terrace Bunbury Street and later 17 Glapton Road (both Meadows Nottingham). In the 1911 census his family were living at 17 Glapton Road, Nottingham, William Henry is 45 yrs and is a hospital porter, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 39 yrs and their 5 children, Henry Herbert 16 yrs a gardeners boy, Lillian Mary 14 yrs an errand girl, Horace 12 yrs, Gladys Maude 9 yrs and Herbert 7 years of age.

Military History

Hickling was sent to France at the start of the war with 'D' Squadron and was involved in heavy fighting during the First Battle of Ypres. He was killed in action on November 20, 1914. His body was not recovered.Menin Gate Memorial Panel 3
