Family History

Frederick Hopkinson was born in 1893 at Keyworth and was the son of Henry a fish and fruit dealer and Alice Hopkinson née Reynolds of Selby Lane, Keyworth. His father Henry was born in 1865 at Basford, his mother Alice Reynolds was born in 1871 at Clee Hill, Shropshire, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they went on have the following children all of whom were born in Keyworth, Frederick Charles b1893, George Albert b1895, Bertram b1897, John William b1903, Arthur b1905 and Thomas b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at Selby Lane Keyworth and are shown as Henry 46 yrs a fish & fruit dealer, he is living with his wife Alice 40 yrs and their children, Frederick Charles 18 yrs a bottle packer, George Albert 16 yrs a bottle packer Bertram 14 yrs a bottle packer, John William 8 yrs a scholar, Arthur 6 yrs and Thomas 2 yrs of age

Military History

Rifleman Frederick Hopkinson enlisted in Ripley on 23rd April 1912, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 6 months, his occupation as that of a coal miner who worked for Palmer Morwood Engineers, Bacous Yard, Alfreton, his next of kin was his father Henry Hopkinson of Selby Lane Keyworth. He was posted to the 5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was embodied on 5th August 1914. He was discharged from the Army on 28th September 1914 due to him being medically unfit to serve. He either re enlisted or was called up as he joined the 10th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps and was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval memorial, Somme, France.
