Family History

Frederick Hooks was born in 1896 he was the elder son of Sarah and the late Henry Hooks of 41 Church Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire. Henry was born in 1859 at Warsop, he died in 1913 he was 54 yrs old, Sarah was born in 1869 at Newthorpe, they were married C1894 they had 3 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 41 Church Street, Eastwood, Henry is 52 yrs and is a wagon examiner, he is living with his wife Sarah 42 yrs and their sons Fred 15 yrs a shop assistant and Harold 12 yrs a scholar. On the 1911 census they state that they have been married for 17 yrs and had 3 children, 1 of which had died.

Military History

Private Frederick Hooks enlisted 2/11/1915 in Ilkeston and served with 18th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps and served in France between May and October 1916 when he was invalided home. In January 1917 he returned to duty with the 2/20th battalion London Regiment (Blackheath & Woolwich) he was drafted to Salonika in February 1917 and was killed in action on 25th April 1917, His name is commemorated on the Doiran Memorial in Greece.

Extra Information

A younger brother Harold also trained with the Sherwood Foresters for seven months. On embarkation he was transferred to the West Kent Regiment and received a shrapnel wound to the foot (Eastwood & Kimberley Advertiser 2/11/1917).
