Samuel Hetterley was born in 1892 at Hathern, Leicestershire, he was the only son of (George) Frederick a hosiery wool worker and his second wife Mary Jane Hetterley née Haywood they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district. His father Frederick was born in 1857 at Sielby his first wife was Elizabeth Watkin Monk who was born in 1851 at Hathern, she died in 1886 aged 35 yrs, they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district, they had the following children, George b1878, Alice b1881, Harry b1883, Nellie b1885 and Samuel b1886 however he died later in 1886 all were born in Hathern. In the 1911 census Samuel is living with his married sister Mrs Nellie Abel they are living at 7 King Road, Warsop and are shown as John Henry Abel 25 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Ellen Abel 26 yrs and Samuel Hetterley 19 yrs a coal miner pony driver (brother in law) His next of kin shown in his army service record is Nellie Abel of 13 Victoria Street, Warsop.
Lance Corporal Samuel Hetterley enlisted on15th October 1914 at Mansfield giving his age as 22 yrs and 2 months his address as 13 Victoria Street, Warsop, he was a coal miner and his next of kin was his married sister Nellie Abel of the same address. He served with the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and went to France 4th September 1916 and was appointed Lance Corporal 7th November 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his right thigh 13th March 1917 and died of these wounds at No. 43 Casualty Clearing Station, Warlincourt, France on the same day aged 25. He is buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, France. Plot 5. Row D. Grave 9.
