William Hale was born in 1897 at Basford and was the son of Noah a coal miner hewer and Maria Hale née Pheasant of Top End, Carsic Lane, Sutton in Ashfield. Noah was born in 1870 in Staffordshire, Maria Pheasant was born in 1867 at Ilkeston, they were married on 25th January 1896 at St Leodegarious Church, Basford, they had 3 other children, Percy b1901, Ernest b1907 and Sidney b1909 all were born in Sutton in Ashfield. In 1911 the family were living at Top End Carsic Lane Sutton in Ashfield, Noah 41 yrs is a coal miner hewer, William 14 yrs is a coal miner pony driver
Private William Hale enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he initially served with the service number 105815 in the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). He was killed in action on 27th August 1918 and is buried at Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.
