Family History

Benjamin Griffiths was born in 1899 he was the son of James a coal miner hewer and Louisa née Hubble and the brother of Louisa Hubble, Lily, William Henry, Emma May, John, Noah Edna and Wilfred Griffiths. James was born 1873 at Newton, Worcestershire, Louisa Hubble was born in 1874 at Windmill End, Worcestershire, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Dudley registration district. They went on to have 11 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 2 Swann Yard, Huthwaite. James is 38 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Louisa 37 yrs and their 9 children.

Military History

Private Benjamin Griffiths enlisted at Mansfield on 21st May 1917 giving his age as 18 yrs and 27 days, his occupation as a coal miner and his address as Swann Yard Huthwaite. He was posted to the 9th training battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed at Boulogne, France on 1st April 1918 and was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment.. He was killed in action on 4th November 1918 and is buried at Valenciennes Communal Cemetery, France.
