Frederick Herbert Fewkes was born in 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of William a master plasterer and Mary Fewkes née Roberts of 520,Moore Rd, Porchester Road, Mapperley, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1874 at Carlton, his mother Mary Roberts was born in 1872 at Boughton, they were married on 16th March 1895 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children, William Edward b1896, Albert Ernest b1897, Frederick Herbert b1898, Edith Alice b1900, Ida Mary b1902, Gladys Lizzie b1904, Percival b1906, Harold George b1907, Leslie b1909, Winifred b1912, Cyril b1913, Grace b1915 and Reginald b1918, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 520 Moore Road, Mapperley and are shown as William 37 yrs a master plasterer, he is living with his wife Mary 38 yrs and their children, William Edward 15 yrs a plasterers apprentice, Albert Ernest 14 yrs a plasterers apprentice, Frederick Herbert a home help, Edith Alice 11 yrs a scholar, Ida Mary 9 yrs a scholar, Gladys Lizzie 7 yrs a scholar, Percival 5 yrs, Harold George 4 yrs and Leslie 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Frederick Herbert Fewkes enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Mapperley, Nottingham, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 19th August 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Somme, France.
