George Thomas Harold Coulby (known as Harold) was born on 10th December 1884 and was the son of William a farmer and Alice Coulby née Marsh of Coronation Street, New Balderton, Newark His father Wiliam was born in 1860 at Claypole and his mother Alice Marsh was born in 1861 at Ragnall, they were married in 1884 the marriage was registered in the East Retford registration district, they went on to have the following children, George Thomas Harold b1884 Carrington, and Reginald born 1887 Nottingham. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Claypole near Newark and are shown as William 51 yrs of age a farmer he is living with his wife Alice 50 yrs and their children Harold 26 yrs a clerk and Reginald 24 yrs a farmers son working on the farmer, they also have a domestic servant Annie Hickman 19 yrs living with them. George married Ethel Faith Slater (born 25th June 1887) in 1914 at Nottingham they lived at 11 Berridge Rd. East, Nottingham and had two sons William born 3rd June 1915 and Harold born 17th July 1917. His probate was proven on 28th January 1919 in Nottingham shows him as George Thomas Harold Coulby of 14 Great Freeman Street, Nottingham , Private in His Majesties Army, died 2nd September 1918 in France, his effects of £231 9 shillings and 1 pence were left to his widow Ethel Faith Coulby
Private George Thomas Harold Coulby enlisted at Sheffield and initially served with the service number 6250 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was serving with the 7th battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry when he was killed in action on 2nd September 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published in the Newark Herald on 19th October 1918 :- Son of William & Alice Coulby, Coronation Street, New Balderton. Husband of Ethel Faith Coulby, 11 Berridge Road East, Nott’m. At the time he joined up was agent at Sheffield for Warwick & Richardsons. Always a clean living, cheery, easy going fellow, he nevertheless had a most upright disposition. Leaves two children.In memoriam published 2nd September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “COULBY. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. Harold Coulby, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action September 2nd, 1918. Cherished memories, shattered hopes, ever in our thoughts. – From sorrowing wife and children, 14 Great Freeman-street. “COULBY. – In loving remembrance of my only brother, Pte. Harold Coulby, who fell in action September 2nd, 1918; also my dear cousin, Pte. George Marsh, M.M., killed in action September 27th, 1918. – From Reg. and Mona. “COULBY. – In ever-loving memory of Pte. Harold Coulby, 1/7th Sherwood Foresters, killed in action September 2nd, 1918, dearly loved eldest son of William and Alice Coulby, Coronation-street, Balderton, Newark, aged 33; also his dear cousin, Pte.
