Herbert Coulby was born in 1890 he was the son of Tom a railway signalman and the late Hannah Coulby née Groobey of 93 Trafalgar Street, Radford. Tom Coulby was born in 1859 at Eaton, Nottinghamshire, Hannah Groobey was born in 1858 at Blyth she died in 1907 aged 49 yrs, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford registration district, they went on to have 6 children. Herbert married Elizabeth Needham (born 14th September 1891) in Nottingham in 1915. They lived at 9 Graham Street, Radford Boulevard, Nottingham and was the grandson of Tom and the late Hannah Coulby. In the 1911 census , Herbert is shown as being 21 yrs of age, single and a Private Soldier serving with the 1st battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he is in barracks with his battalion in Hong Kong. In the same 1911 census his father is living at 93 Trafalgar Street, Radford, he is 52 yrs of age a railway signal man, he is living with his second wife Mary (Darling) 36 yrs and their son Tom 3yrs of age and his children, George 26 yrs and Ada 17 yrs. Commencing 12th March 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week.
Private Herbert Coulby enlisted at Nottingham. He was reported missing on 1 July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille (grave ref XVI.AB.11).
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 5 May 1917: 'Coulby. Missing July 1st now reported killed in action, Private Herbert Coulby, KOYLI, age 27. Wife Elizabeth, 9 Graham Street. Grandson of Tom and the late Hannah Coulby.'
