Born 1896 at Holbeck, Leeds, Yorkshire the son of George and Elizabeth Alice Dodd. His father was an assistant Auditor for the Great Northern Railway. In 1901 the family were living at 73 Stratford Street, Hunslet in Yorkshire. George had two older sisters. By 1911 the family had moved to No 22 Claude Rd, Chorlton cum Hardy in Lancashire and his father was now a District Auditor. The family moved to Carlton after 1911 where George senior died in 1915 and was buried in Carlton Cemetery. George Baker was an employee of the Great Northern Railway.
He enlisted at Nottingham and was formerly 55645 of the Royal Garrison Artillery and it was whilst with them that he was awarded the Military Medal. He was then attached to 81st Brigade., Royal Garrison Artillery., Signal Company. SUB. SECT., Royal Engineers as 357745. He died of gas shell poisoning and was buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France. He was eligible for the British and Victory medals. He is also commemorated on the family gravestone in Carlton Cemetery
