Family History

Thomas Clarke was born in 1892 at Newthorpe Common and was the son of George a coal miner hewer and Harriet Clarke née Leverton of Ellesmere House Grey Street Newthorpe Common Nottinghamshire. His father George was born in 1852 at Hickling, his mother Harriett was born in 1856 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, John b1878, George b1880, Enos b1882, Gertrude b1885, William b1887, Mable b1890, Thomas b1892, Lottie b1893, Lilly b1897 and Raymond b1909. In the 1911 census the family were living at Gret Street, Newthorpe Common and were shown as Thomas 58 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Harriett 56 yrs and their children, Thomas 19 yrs a shop assistant, Lilley 14 yrs no occupation listed, Raymond 10 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Thomas Clarke enlisted at Tunstall Staffordshire on June 21st 1916 and served with 8th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was reported wounded 12th April 1917 and was killed in action between 9th and 12th April 1917. His death was confirmed on 7th September 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
