Family History

Thomas Chilton was born in 1894 he was the son of William Henry a coal miner hewer and Mary Chilton née Smith of 80 Portland Street, Pleasley, Mansfield. William Henry and Mary Smith were both born in 1867 at Brownhills, they were married on 22nd April 1889 at St James Church, Brownhills, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at High Street, Brownhills, Walsall, William Henry is 44 yrs a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Mary 44 yrs and 7 of their children including Thomas 16 yrs a coal miner gripper.

Military History

Lance Corporal Thomas Chilton enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Pleasley he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 18th September 1918 and is buried at Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France.

Extra Information

His father William Henry Chilton also served during the war with the service number 20830 Sherwood Foresters regiment, he enlisted on 17th December 1914 and was discharged as a result of wounds on 21st January 1919 aged 41 yrs, he was awarded a Silver war badge number 107648. he died on 28th August 1922
