Thomas Henry was the only child of Henry Bewlay and his second wife Kate Bewlay nee Richardson.His father was married first to Mary Barnes (1849 A/M/J York) and they had at least three children: Jane, Elizabeth and Thomas (b. abt 1857). It is possible that both daughters died in infancy, but in 1871 Thomas (13) was living with his parents at 13 High Petergate, York. Thomas married Hannah Mary Booth in York on 8 November 1879 and they had two children, Lily (bap. 3 July 1881 York) and Rose (bap. 30 July 1883 York). Thomas died in 1883 (O/N/D York) age 26 and his wife Hannah died in 1885 (J/A/S York) also at the age of 26.Henry's wife, Mary, died in 1885 (J/A/S York) and in 1888 Henry married Kate Richardson (marriage registered J/A/S Salford, Lancashire). Their son Thomas Henry was baptised on 18 November 1888 at the Chapelry of St Clement, Ordsall-in-Salford, Lancashire.In 1891 Henry (63), a cabinet maker and upholsterer, and Kate (28) were living in York with their son Thomas (2) and Henry's granddaughters, Lily (9) and Rose (7). Also in the household was a general domestic servant, Ada Ellis (16).Henry died on 24 February 1894 and by 1901 the widowed Kate (33) was living at 17 South Parade, York, and described as a lodging house keeper. In the household was her son Thomas (12) and her husband's granddaughters, Lily (19) a pupil teacher, and Rose (17).Kate later moved to Nottingham and in 1907 married Edward James Robinson (marriage registered J/A/S Basford).Thomas emigrated to Canada as the probate record gives his address as Avontem, Michigan Street, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.At the time of Thomas's death his mother was living at 50 Henry Road, West Bridgford, although she later lived at 33 Compton Road, Sherwood, Nottingham (CWGC). Kate was still living at the same address at the time of her death on 10 July 1943.
36th Siege BtyHe died of wounds at 99 Field Ambulance on 21 May 1917 and is buried in Henin Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas-de-Calais, France.
