John Berrington (Junior) was born in 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of John Berrington (senior) a general labourer and Sarah Ann Berrington née Hall of 366, Denman St., Radford, Nottingham. His father John (senior) was born in 1870 at Nottingham, his mother Sarah Ann Hall was born in 1871 also in Nottingham, they were married at the Nottingham Registrar office on 8th March 1890, they had the following children, Arthur b1893, Edith b1896, John b1898 and Mabel b1904, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 49 St Pauls Street, Radford and were shown as John Berrington 41 yrs a general labourer he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 40 yrs and their children, Arthur 18 yrs a coal miner hewer, Edith 15 yrs working at home, John 13 yrs a scholar and Mabel 7 yrs a scholar.
Private John Berrington enlisted at Nottingham, he served initially with the service number 16648 in the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 12th February 1916 and was accidentally killed on 24th July 1917 and is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery
His father John Berrington (senior) enlisted on 7th April 1915 at Nottingham, he was 40 yrs and 5 months (he was in fact older 45 yrs being born in 1870) he served with the Middlesex Regiment and was discharged from the Army on 17th May 1916 due to sickness, he was awarded a silver war badge no 29262, he saw no service overseas. His brother Arthur Berrington enlisted on 26th August 1914 at Nottingham giving his age as 22 yrs and 99 days, he was a coal miner, he was posted with the service number 10260 to the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was discharged from the army on 30th October 1914 as he was unlikely to become an efficient soldier, he was totally unfit to perform the duties required of a soldier
