He was the son of Thomas Berridge of Willoughby Street Lenton Nottingham. He was the husband of Harriet S L (née Hammond) Berridge of 56 Morehall Avenue Folkestone. He was the father of Joan Berridge.
John Berridge enlisted in Derby on 15th March 1902. He served in South Africa 1902 - 1904 and in India 1904 - 1910. He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 19th January 1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his bravery on 2nd March 1915. His photograph was published in the local press on 29th March 1915. His official citation reads:- “For gallant conduct at St. Eloi on 2nd March, 1915, in going out of his trench alone and lying in the open firing effectively on the enemy's barricade. Subsequently he was joined by several other men in this risky work.” He was also awarded the Order of St. George 2nd Class (Russia). Promoted to Company Sergeant Major, John Berridge was killed in action on 10th May 1915. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate. He had served in the Army for 13 yrs and 57 days.
