Family History

Horace Claude Hill was baptised on 26th December 1886 at Christ Church, Radford, he was the son of William a railway porter and the late Sarah Hill née Phillips, he was the brother of George William, Richard and Robert Hill. they lived at 11 Frederick Grove Nottingham. William was born in 1857 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire, Sarah Phillips was born in 1860 at Shelton, she died in 1905 at Nottingham aged 45 yrs they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they had 4 children. In the 1911 census he was boarding with the Merrett family at 14 Pinders House Road Crocus Street Meadows Nottingham. Horace married Florence Merrett (born 25th November 1893) in 1912 they lived at 14 Houseman Street, Mayfield Street they had 2 children, Doris May born 17th June 1913 and Edit Winifred born 6th August 1914. Commencing 3rd January 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Rifleman Horace Claude Hill, enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 3rd Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, . He landed in France on 26th May 1915 and died of wounds at the 83rd Field Ambulance, Armentieres, on 26th June 1915. He is buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Nord France, Grave Reference: IX B 14
