Ernest was the son of George and Sarah Bell of 64 Marecroft, Worksop he was born Worksop 1884. Siblings - Frederick born Worksop 1882, William born Worksop 1884, Sarah Jane born Worksop 1887.

Military History

Pte Ernest Bell Worksop Guardian 4 January 1918 On Christmas Eve, Mrs Bell of 79 Marecroft, Worksop received the official news that her husband, Pte Ernest Bell, Sherwood Foresters, had been killed in action in France on December 6th. Deceased was 36 years of age and leaves four children under the age of eleven. He enlisted in January 1915 and in February 1916, he went to France. Before enlisting, Pte Bell worked at Shireoaks colliery. Mrs Bell has a brother serving in France, Sapper Edward Thompson, who joined the army two years ago. Much sympathy is felt with Pte Bell’s family and friends. Ernest Bell Ernest was the son of George and Sarah Bell of 64 Marecroft, Worksop and was serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters in December 1917 at the time of the German counterattacks to regain lost ground following the Battle of Cambrai. At the time of his death on 6 December 1917, the 2nd Battalion was in the front line near to Marcoing patrolling and digging a new outpost line but were subject to heavy shelling. During this battle and its aftermath the Battalion had 2 officers and 21 other ranks killed including Private Ernest Bell who is buried at Ribecourt British Cemetery south west of Cambrai Courtesy of Robert Illett
