Edward Pettit enlisted in early September 1914 but he did not go overseas until after 1 January 1916. He is also listed as 'Ernest' on his medal index card and medal roll. The battalion had a tough time in July 1917 whilst holding the front line forward of La Belle Alliance near Ypres. They moved into the line on the night of 15/16th July and it is probable that Edward was wounded during this time. It was always more dangerous moving in or out of the line as the enemy used artillery against the front, reserve and communication trenches. Dozinghem had a number of Casualty Clearing Stations which had been set up in preparation for 3rd Ypres. Edward died of his wounds and was buried in the attached cemetery - Dozingham Military Cemetery, grave I. D. 16. Dozinghem is located at Westvleteren, as the Tommy humour was used in naming three new cemeteries - Do(z)singhem, Mendinghem and Bandageham. John Morse
