Albert William Cooper was born in Barlborough, Derbyshire on the 26 June 1897, the son of Robert and Elizabeth, nee Grose. He was christened a month later on the 26th July at Barlborough Common. Siblings John Henry, Bernard and Ethel were all born before him and a younger child, Edward was born in 1900. After their marriage in Nottingham, the couple lived at 16 Springfield Terrace, Ilkeston before moving on to Barlborough. Around 1900, they were living in Worksop at 130 Sandy Lane where the father, Robert was the manager of a brick yard. In 1911 when Albert was just 13 years old he had made his start in work as an errand boy.
Albert enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters from Worksop. He fought in France, was killed in action and commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial. Albert’s brother, John Henry, also lost his life in May 1917, after joining the 1st Battalion Canadian Infantry Pte William Cooper Retford Times 15th November 1918 Four sons - two killed The sad news was received on Friday from the Lichfield Record Office that Pte William Cooper (21) Notts and Derbys Regt, third son of Mr and Mrs R Cooper 130 Sandy Lane, was killed in france on October 7th. he was a wood turner at Mssers Oates ltd, Worksop and had been in France fourteen months. He was associated with the primitive Methodist Society, was a member of the John Street Chapel choir, and was held in great esteem by a large circle of friends. This is the second bereavement the parents have sustained through the war. Their eldest son, Pte H Cooper (29) who enlisted in the Canadians, was reported missing a year ago last May, and has since been presumed to have been killed. Two other brothers are serving:- Pte Bernard Cooper (27) was wounded after a short time in France. he belonged to the Scottish Rifles and is now in the Royal Defence Corps. he was formerly at the Chemical Works where his father is now employed. The other brother Pte Edward Cooper (19) enlisted three months ago in Lincoln Regt, and has just been sent to France. he was up to joining the Army working at Steetley Quarry. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Cooper in their bereavement. The portrait is from a photo by Messrs Taylor and Son, Bridge Place.
The four sons of Robert and Elizabeth Cooper all served in the army during the 'Great war ' Pte Bernard Cooper Scottish Rifles (later Royal defence Corps ) - Pte Edward Cooper Lincolnshire Regiment - both survived , however tragically Pte John Henry Cooper Canadian army died 3rd May 1917, and Albert William Cooper Sherwood Foresters who died 7th October 1918 made the ultimate sacrifice which must have devastated their remaining family.
