His father Herbert William was born in Derby and his mother Florence Elizabeth in the East Indies of British parents. His parents had seven children of whom only six survived childhood: William Henry Ephraim and Florence Eliza who were both born in Derby, Fanny who was born in Nottingham and Albert Herbert, Hetty Elizabeth and Lillie May who were born in Kirkby in Ashfield. In 1901 Herbert William (26), a locomotive engine fitter, and Florence (28) were living at 47 Annesley Street, Nottingham, with their three children, William (4), Florence (2) and Fanny (1 month). By 1911 the family had move to 15 St Thomas's Avenue, Kirkby in Ashfield. Herbert (36) was still working as a machinery locomotive fitter. He and Florence now had six children: Wiliam an errand boy (grocer), Florence, Fanny, Albert (7), Hetty (4) and Lillie (11 months). William married Maria L Copeland in 1920 (A/M/J Shardlow) and at the time of his death in 1927 they were living at 15 Lawrence Street, Stapleford.

Extra Information

William died in 1927 so his name does not appear on the CWGC Debt of Honour. However the identification of this man with St Thomas' war memorial suggests that the war memorial committee or equivalent accepted that his death was a result either of war service or of circumstances associated with the war. Although Wiliam was living in Stapleford at the time of his death it is probable that his parents were still living in Kirkby in Ashfield where they were recorded on the 1911 Census. Stapleford & Sandiacre News, 25 March 1927, ‘Stapleford Man’s Death. General sympathy has been extended to the widow and relatives of the late Mr William Henry Ephraim Sharp, of 15, Lawrence-street, Stapleford, who passed away on Saturday last, at the early age of 30.
