Harrison Sledmore

In 1914, the Regiment mobilised and was sent to Egypt after a period of training. In 1915, it was ordered to Gallipoli where it served dismounted for three months. Harrison did not accompany this regiment at first but went to Egypt in May of 1916 and soon was sent to Salonica in Greece, and was probably involved in the local troubles. He was returned to Egypt but on the way there, his ship was torpedoed (this may have been the transport ship Arcadian on the 4th April 1917). After his Egypt excursion he was sent to Palestine. Although there are no details to hand, reports tell of him being wounded and that he died of his wounds two days later on the 3rd November 1917. His name is written on the Jerusalem Memorial. His death was made public in the Retford Times, stating a few scant details, which is transcribed below. The details is accompanied with a photo of him in uniform. Trooper H Sledmore (Retford Times 23/11/1917) “Official information has been received of the death of Harrison Sledmore of the Yeomanry, whose home address was at Blyth Road, Ranskill. He died of wounds in Palestine and was only 21 years of age. He joined up on mobilisation on August 4th 1914 and went to Egypt in May 1916. From there he went to Salonica and returned to Egypt being torpedoed on the way. Previous to joining up he was with Mr J E G Smith, Carolgate, Retford.”
